A Time Travel Tour: Hidden Historic Sites of North Buckhead

Date: Saturday, October 12, 2013

Time: 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Location: 496 Chateaugay Lane, Atlanta 30342

We sincerely thank our host Gantt Cookson for opening his doors to our guests.

Guests were transported back in time with a tour of two of North Buckhead’s earliest, little-known historic sites. Attendees met at an early 20th century hunting lodge nestled discreetly amidst later development at the top of Chateaugay Lane and explored the inside of this beautiful relic with exposed pine walls and ceilings, crab orchard fireplaces, and a cedar shake roof. They then took a short walk down Wieuca Road to the Stephens Mill Condominiums where the rush of a waterfall and scattered mill artifacts conjured up a time when area farmers traveled here from miles around to get their corn ground into meal. And they learned about the mill’s connection to an old, unseen family cemetery onLoridans Drive—a cemetery that accepted its first known burial after a quarrel between two early settlers ended in murder.

This program was co-sponsored by Buckhead Heritage and the Blue Heron Nature Preserve.

Discovery Walk Back In Time

Date: Saturday, October 12, 2013

Time: 9:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.

Location: Blue Heron Nature Preserve, 4055 Roswell Road, Atlanta 30342

Kids traveled back in time with a discovery walk along Nancy Creek, which was the lifeblood of Native Americans and early settlers in area. Kids hunted for ancient artifacts on its banks and built a fishing weir like the Creeks would have used more than 200 years ago.

This program was co-sponsored by the Blue Heron Nature Preserve and Buckhead Heritage.
