Dr. David C. Lowance

Biography

Dr. David Lowance was born in Atlanta at Emory Hospital in 1940. He attended Emory Medical School as did his father, Mason Lowance. Dr. Lowance was raised in the Buckhead community and attended Westminster as a child. The Doctor is retired from Piedmont Hospital; however, he is still known for making house calls in the Buckhead area.

Abstract of Interview

Dr. Lowance discusses what it was like to grow up in the Buckhead community in the 1940s and 1950s. He recalls childhood memories of Buckhead and reflects on the enormous growth of the community. Dr. Lowance touches on a number of subjects from segregation, to his work at Piedmont Hospital, to the effects of WWII on the community, to hotspots Buckhead youth frequented in the 1950s.

Below is a video excerpt from the interview in which Dr. Lowance recalls attending Mrs. Bloodworth's kindergarten class, which was located in the building that stands at the intersection of Peachtree Road and Peachtree Battle Avenue. He also recalls watching E. Rivers School burn down when he was a young boy.
