Speaker Series: March 5, 2020 Matt Matternes, at New Hope AME Church on Arden Rd.
Buckhead Heritage presented the initial report of our research and mapping work documenting the New Hope Cemetery on Arden Road. Matt Matternes, PhD, is a Senior Mortuary Archaeologist with New South Associates He presented “Eternal Homecoming: Documenting the New Hope AME Church Cemetery.”. Thanks to a Buckhead Heritage grant funded by the Massey Charitable Trust, Matt and his staff have been working with our cemetery committee to document this historic Buckhead property. Through deed, church and family research combined with site analysis and mapping, Matt’s team has begun documenting over 100 years of the unique history of this neighborhood time capsule. This is the first of several contemplated phases of work at New Hope. The church and cemetery are located at 3012 Arden Road, NW, Atlanta, GA 30305.
