Sam Massell Remembered

By Wright Mitchell, Buckhead Heritage Founder

Buckhead lost a giant with the passing of Sam Massell.  Mayor Massell touched almost every Buckhead organization in his many years leading the Buckhead Coalition.  Buckhead Heritage was no different.

When the idea to form Buckhead Heritage was in its infancy, a lunch took place at Mayor Massell’s favorite dining spot, The White House.  The question was posed to Mayor Massell whether he thought Buckhead would benefit from the existence of a historic preservation group.  Mayor Massell responded enthusiastically that not only was this a great idea, but that he would be happy to serve as a Founding Board Member.  Mayor Massell was present at Buckhead Heritage’s first Board Meeting in 2006.

During his two terms as a Board Member, Mayor Massell attended numerous meeting and offered valuable feedback on various preservation issues.  Mayor Massell was an ardent cheerleader for Buckhead Heritage and championed our causes on a regular basis.  Mayor Massell’s presence on the Board also lent credibility to a fledgling organization when we needed it most.

Buckhead Heritage is indebted to Mayor Massell for his many years of support.  Like the rest of Buckhead, we will miss Mayor Massell’s leadership and dedication to making Buckhead a better place to live.
