Harmony Grove Tours, 2011

Nearly 40 people joined Buckhead Heritage for tours of Harmony Grove Cemetery as part of the Atlanta Preservation Center’s Phoenix Flies–A Citywide Celebration of Living Landmarks. On the tours, guests viewed a fascinating variety of formal and informal gravestones that mark the final resting places of some of Buckhead’s earliest residents. False crypts, stylized obelisks, upright slabs, and rudimentary fieldstones visually tell the story of economic and racial disparity in the Buckhead community in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Founded in 1870, Harmony Grove Cemetery is one of the few remaining landmarks that hearkens back to Buckhead’s origins as a rural farming community.
